How zakat is calculated

  1. Add up the market value of gold, silver, cash, bank balances, investments, business stock and money owed to you.
  2. Subtract debts that are due now (not the full amount of a long-term loan, only the instalments currently payable).
  3. Compare the result with nisab. If it is equal to or more than nisab, and you held this wealth for a lunar year, zakat is due.
  4. Zakat = 2.5% (one-fortieth) of net zakatable wealth.

Example

Suppose silver is Rs 5,000 per tola, so nisab is 52.5 × 5,000 = Rs 262,500. You own 3 tola of gold at Rs 400,000 per tola (Rs 1,200,000), Rs 300,000 in the bank and Rs 50,000 cash, and owe Rs 100,000 due this month. Net wealth = Rs 1,450,000, which is above nisab. Zakat = 2.5% × 1,450,000 = Rs 36,250.

Rental property itself is not zakatable, but the rent you have saved is counted as cash. For shares, some scholars count the full market value and others only the zakatable assets of the company; use the full value if unsure.

This calculator follows common Hanafi guidance used in Pakistan. For complex cases (agricultural produce, business partnerships, pension funds), please consult a qualified scholar or Darul Ifta.

Frequently asked questions

What is the nisab for zakat in Pakistan?

Nisab is 52.5 tola (612.36 g) of silver or 7.5 tola (87.48 g) of gold. Most scholars in Pakistan advise using the silver nisab when your wealth is a mix of cash, gold and other assets, because it is lower and benefits more poor people.

Is zakat due on gold jewellery that is worn?

In the Hanafi school followed by most Pakistanis, zakat is due on gold and silver jewellery whether it is worn or kept. Other schools exempt jewellery in regular use. Follow the opinion of the scholar you trust.

Is zakat payable on my house, car or furniture?

No. Personal-use items such as your home, car, clothes and household goods are exempt. Property bought to resell is business stock and is included at its market value.

Do banks deduct zakat automatically?

Banks deduct zakat on the first day of Ramadan from savings accounts above the government-notified nisab, unless you have submitted a zakat exemption declaration (CZ-50). If the bank deducted zakat, subtract it from the amount calculated here.

When must zakat be paid?

Zakat becomes due when your wealth stays at or above nisab for one full lunar year (hawl). Many people use Ramadan as their annual calculation date for simplicity.
