How your bill is calculated
- Energy charges = units × per-unit rate for your slab.
- Fixed charges = rate per kW × your sanctioned load.
- FPA = units × the fuel adjustment notified for that month.
- Electricity duty = a small provincial percentage of energy and fixed charges.
- GST = 18% of the cost of electricity including FPA.
- Possible extras: TV fee, advance income tax for people not on the Active Taxpayer List, and arrears.
Example: 250 units on a 2 kW non-protected connection with no FPA: energy 250 × 33.10 = Rs 8,275; fixed charges 350 × 2 = Rs 700; duty 1.5% ≈ Rs 135; GST 18% ≈ Rs 1,616. Estimated total ≈ Rs 10,725, an average of about Rs 43 per unit.
Ways to keep your bill in a lower slab
- Watch the meter in the last week of the billing cycle; staying at 200 units protects the next six months.
- Inverter ACs set to 26°C use far fewer units than older non-inverter units at 18–20°C.
- Replace old fans with DC/inverter fans and bulbs with LEDs – the savings add up across a summer.
- Consider net metering with solar panels if your roof and budget allow.
- Ask for a lower sanctioned load if it is set higher than you need, as fixed charges are per kW.

Frequently asked questions
What is a protected electricity consumer?
A domestic consumer who has used 200 units or less in each of the previous six months. Protected consumers get much lower per-unit rates and telescopic billing. One month above 200 units removes the status for the next six months.
Why did my bill jump when I crossed 200 or 300 units?
Non-protected consumers are charged the rate of the slab their total falls into for every unit. Using 201 units instead of 200 moves all units to the higher rate, and fixed charges per kW also rise, so a few extra units can add hundreds of rupees.
What is FPA or FCA on the bill?
Fuel Price Adjustment (also called Fuel Charges Adjustment) is the difference between the fuel cost assumed in the tariff and the actual cost for a past month, approved by NEPRA. It can be positive or negative and is usually charged about two months later.
Do K-Electric customers have the same rates?
K-Electric domestic base rates follow the uniform national tariff set by the federal government, but its FCA decisions and some charges can differ from the government distribution companies.
How can I check how many units I used?
Subtract the previous meter reading from the present reading printed on your bill. On smart or prepaid meters the units are shown on the meter display or the company app.
