How to check your NTN

NTN for a business or company

A sole proprietor uses their personal NTN and adds the business in IRIS. An AOP (partnership) or a company registers separately and gets a 7-digit NTN; companies first register with SECP. Sales tax registration (STRN) is a further step for businesses that must charge sales tax.

After you get your NTN

File your income tax return every year by the deadline (usually 30 September) to become a filer and pay much less tax on property, cars and banking – see how much in the filer vs non-filer calculator. Work out your tax with the salary tax calculator or the business income tax calculator.

Your CNIC is only used on this page to show your NTN format and is not sent anywhere. Always register on the official FBR website.

Frequently asked questions

What is my NTN number?

For individuals, your NTN (National Tax Number) is your 13-digit CNIC number once you register on FBR’s IRIS portal. Companies and AOPs get a separate 7-digit NTN.

How can I check my NTN online?

Use the Online Verification service on FBR’s e-services website (e.fbr.gov.pk) and choose NTN, or open the Tax Asaan app. Search with your CNIC; if you are registered you will see your name and registration details.

How long does NTN registration take?

For an individual it usually takes 10–15 minutes online. Once you verify the codes sent to your mobile and email, your NTN is active immediately.

Is there a fee for getting an NTN?

No. Registering for an NTN on IRIS is free. Agents may charge for doing it for you, but you can easily do it yourself.

Does having an NTN make me a filer?

No. An NTN only means you are registered. You become a filer when you file your income tax return and your name appears on the Active Taxpayer List (ATL).

Can overseas Pakistanis get an NTN?

Yes. Overseas Pakistanis can register on IRIS with their CNIC or NICOP. The mobile number used must be registered in their name, or they can use the email-based process FBR provides for non-residents.
