Frequently asked questions
How much tax is paid on registering a new car in Pakistan?
Under section 231B, advance tax on registration is a percentage of the car’s value including duties and taxes: from 0.5% for cars up to 850cc to 12% above 3000cc for filers. Non-filers pay three times the filer rate for FY 2026-27.
How much tax on an 1300cc car for a non-filer?
A 1001–1300cc car attracts 1.5% for a filer and 4.5% for a non-filer. On a Rs 45 lakh car that is Rs 67,500 versus Rs 202,500.
Is this the same as token tax?
No. Token tax is an annual provincial tax collected by the Excise department with your vehicle tax token. This page covers the federal advance income tax paid at registration. Many provinces also charge non-filers more token tax.
Do I pay this tax when buying a used car?
Transfers of used, already-registered vehicles carry a separate fixed advance tax by engine size, collected at transfer. It is much lower than the first-registration tax, and also higher for non-filers.
