How Upwork earnings are calculated
- Upwork fee = earnings × your contract fee (0–15%).
- Dollars withdrawn = earnings − Upwork fee − withdrawal fee ($0.99 to a local bank).
- Rupees before tax = dollars × dollar rate × (1 − conversion loss).
- Take-home = rupees before tax − export tax (0.25% PSEB registered, 1% otherwise).
Worked example
A $1,000 contract at a 10% fee, Rs 280 per dollar, 1% conversion loss, PSEB registered.
- Upwork fee: $100; after the $0.99 withdrawal, $899.01 is sent to your bank
- Rupees: 899.01 × 280 × 0.99 = Rs 249,206
- Tax: 249,206 × 0.25% = Rs 623
- Take-home: Rs 248,583 – you keep 88.8% of the contract
